Be sure to spend time exploring the atmospheric Old Town, or Casco Viejo, whose core consists of the seven original medieval streets which first formed Bilbao. Here you will find gems including the simple yet beautiful Cathedral of Santiago and the Arriaga Threatre – a beautiful Neo-Baroque theatre and the oldest in Bilbao. Enjoy a stop within the Plaza Nueva, a wonderful traditional Spanish Square enclosed with arcaded buildings; be sure to sample some delicious pintxo on one of the terraces as it said to offer some of the best within the city.

The Guggenheim Museum may be the standout attraction of the city but visit the art district and discover that Bilbao has a whole collection of fantastic museums and art galleries that are well worth a visit. With over 10000 pieces of art split across its two buildings, the Museum of Fine Arts is a must for those interested in art with masterpieces spanning from the 12th century to the present day. While a visit to the Bilbao Basque Museum will allow you to unearth more on the region’s unique history, character and culture.

You may choose to venture outside of Bilbao and uncover the superb food, surfing conditions, nature parks and wines that the Basque Country is renowned for. Head to the capital Victoria-Gasteiz, which despite often being overlooked offers the typical Basque charm as well as an almond shaped medieval Old Town and plenty of green spaces. Or why not fall in love with San Sebastián; explore the charming Old Town, laze along the beautiful La Concha beach or climb to the top of the Monte Urgall for fabulous views.
